Rome, Georgia

Rome Business Signs

Rome is a city located in the northwest portion of the present-day U.S. state of Georgia, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  Due to this area’s location at the confluence of the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers, which form the Coosa River, it was always seen as strategically advantageous.  Therefore, it was occupied by Mississippian, Creek, and Cherokee peoples prior to Spanish Conquest and Forced Native Removal by the United States military.

Rome, Georgia itself was founded in 1834 by Colonels Daniel R. Mitchell, Zacharia Hargrove, William Smith, Major Phillip Hemphill, and John Lumpkin (who was the nephew of Governor Lumpkin).  Most of these men were veterans of the War of 1812.  Colonel Mitchell suggested Rome as the city’s name due to the seven hills it would be built upon – just as the city of Ancient Rome had been built upon seven hills in Italy.  Rome, Georgia was officially incorporated on December 20th, 1834.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Rome, Georgia has a total population of 36,407 people.  This makes it the largest city in Northwest Georgia and the nineteenth most populous city in the whole state of Georgia.  Rome, Georgia is the county seat of Floyd County and the principal city of the Rome, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.  According to that same 2016 estimate, Rome, Georgia’s Metropolitan area has a total population of 96,317 people.

Modern day Rome, Georgia is best known, at least economically speaking, for its medical facilities including the Floyd Medical Center, Redmond Regional Medical Center, Harbin Clinic, and the Northwest Georgia Clinical Campus of The Medical College of Georgia, which is part of Georgia Health Sciences University.

Rome, Georgia is also known for its role in the technology industry.  The city is home to several facilities for Brugg Cable and Telecom, Suzuki Manufacturing of America, Neaton Rome, F&P Georgia, Peach State Labs, the North American headquarters of Pirelli Tire, and State Mutual Insurance Company.

The city of Rome, Georgia is also home to a cornucopia of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  These include, but are certainly not limited to, the Dr. Robert Battey House, Berry Schools, Between the Rivers Historic District, Double-Cola Building Company, Etowah Indian Mounds, Floyd County Courthouse, Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Oakdene Place, Rome Clock Tower, Thankful Baptist Church, and the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse.

Rome, Georgia is known for its institutions of higher education such as Shorter University, Georgia Highlands College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, and Berry College.  Interestingly, Berry College, a liberal arts school, was founded by Martha Berry in 1902.  Berry College has also served as the filming location for such iconic movies as Sweet Home Alabama and Remember the Titans.

Rome, Georgia is home to two sporting franchises of note.  They include Professional Indoor Football League’s Georgia Fire, who play their home games at the Forum Civic Center, and the Rome Braves, who play in the South Atlantic League and are a Class A affiliate of MLB’s Atlanta Braves.  Rome Braves have won two league titles.  They play their home games at State Mutual Stadium.
