Sacramento Business Signs
The area of California now known as the city of Sacramento was the home of the Nisenan (Southern Maidu) and Plains Miwok Native American peoples for thousands of years. The first European explorer to the area was Spain’s Gabriel Moraga in 1808. Moraga named the valley and its river after the “Most Holy Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ,” which refers to the Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist. Swiss explorer John Sutter, Sr., however, founded the city of Sacramento itself. Sacramento was incorporated on February 27th, 1850, and chartered in 1920.
Today, Sacramento is the capital of the U.S. state of California. In 2014, a census estimate calculated the city’s population to be 475,122. This makes Sacramento the fifth-largest city in California. The Sacramento metropolitan area, which includes seven counties, has a population of 2,527,123, according to a 2009 estimate. This would make it the 27th largest metropolitan area in the country.
The city of Sacramento is home to companies such as Sutter Health, Blue Diamond Growers, Aerojet, Teichert, and The McClatchy Company. The city’s highest employers, however, are the State of California, which is responsible for 69,763 jobs, and Sacramento County, which is responsible for 11,450 jobs.
Sacramento is also home to California State University, Sacramento. Founded in 1947 as Sacramento State College, California State University, Sacramento has, as of 2014, an endowment of $33.7 million. The university has 28,811 students and 1,479 academic staff. Its campus houses two sites on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Julia Morgan House and the Pony Express.
The Pony Express, in operation from April 3rd, 1860, to October of 1861, was the West’s most efficient way to communicate with the east prior to the invention of the telegraph. It used an innovative way to deliver packages and messages using horseback and a series of relay stations. It stretched from St. Joseph, Missouri, “across the Great Plains, over the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada to Sacramento.”
Sacramento also boasts the California State Capitol, which houses the bicameral state legislature and the office of the governor. This Capitol was based on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and shares its neoclassical style. It was built between 1861 and 1874 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and considered a California Historical Landmark.
One of the most prominent features of the Sacramento skyline is undoubtedly Tower Bridge. This vertical lift bridge, built in the Span Drive Type style, links West Sacramento and Yolo County to the west with the main part of Sacramento to the east. Architectural firm A. Teichert & Son, Inc. designed Tower Bridge, which opened on December 15th, 1935. It has subsequently been added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
The city of Sacramento is home to one professional sports team. They are the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. They play their home games in Sleep Train Arena and have one NBA Championship to their name. The city is home to a minor league baseball team as well, triple A’s Sacramento River Cats. They play their home games at Raley Field. The River Cats are winners of 2 triple A titles and 4 league titles.
