Santa Ana Business Signs
The native Tongva and Juaneno/Luiseno population called the area, which became Santa Ana, “Hotuuk”. Friar Junipero Serra gave it its initial European name, Vallejo de Santa Ana, which translates to Valley of Saint Anne, or Santa Ana Valley. In 1776, Mission San Juan Capistrano was established in this valley, but the city of Santa Ana itself wouldn’t be founded until 1869. It was officially incorporated into a city on June 1st, 1886.
The modern day city of Santa Ana is located within the Greater Los Angeles Area, in Orange County. According to a 2014 estimate by the US Census Bureau, Santa Ana has a population of 331,953 people. This makes it the second largest city in Orange County, the 11th largest city in the state of California, and the 57th largest city in the country. Santa Ana is part of the LA metropolitan area, which itself has a population of 12,828,837 people. This makes it the second largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Santa Ana serves as the corporate headquarters for several large companies. These companies include Behr Paint, CoreLogic, Corinthian Colleges, First American Corporation, Ingram Micro, Greenwood & Hall, the Orange County Register, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, STEC, TTM Technologies, Kern’s, and Wahoo’s Fish Taco. Santa Ana also houses the regional headquarters for the Xerox Corporation, Ultimate Software, and T-Mobile. The Glenn L. Martin Company, which was a precursor to Lockheed Martin, was founded in Santa Ana in 1912. Open Doors, which is a nonprofit, also operates out of the city.
One of the most interesting and well-known businesses in the area is Rickenbacker. This musical instrument company sells electric and bass guitars played by some of the most famous musicians around the world. Santa Ana’s largest employer, however, is County of Orange, which provides 15,390 local jobs. Ingram Micro comes in at a far second, employing 4,000 people.
Santa Ana is part of the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA metropolitan area, which was ranked number two in the country in 2013, with a GMP of $792.2 billion.
Santa Ana is located near a few amusement parks: Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. However, within the city limits, there is a plethora of other fascinating attractions. One of these is Bowers Museum. Established in 1936, the Bowers’ permanent collection contains “more than 100,000 objects focusing on areas such as African, South Pacific, Asian, Native American, Pre-Columbian art, and California plain-air painting.”
Elsewhere in Santa Ana, the Heritage Museum of Orange County displays the Kellogg House and other 1890s buildings. The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park opened in 1952 and attracts 270,000 annual visitors. It houses 250, including an extensive primate collection with over a dozen species from around the world. Other notable sites in Santa Ana include Santa Ana Fire Department’s Firefighter’s Museum, Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society, and the Riverview Golf Course. St. Joseph Catholic Church was established in 1887. Close by, (about 20 minutes away by car) are Huntington and Newport beaches.
Santa Ana’s sports scene primarily features the collegiate teams of Santa Ana College (SAC). This institution was established in 1915, and in Fall 2014, had 38,165 students. Their teams are nicknamed the ‘Dons’ and the college itself is affiliated with the Rancho Santiago Community College District and California Community Colleges. Rancho Santiago Community College District employs 2,300 people, which makes it the third largest employer in the Santa Ana area.
