Sarasota is a city located on the southwestern edge of the present-day U.S. state of Florida’s protuberance.  Prior to European conquest, this area of Florida had been a seasonal place for native fishing.  These natives visited the area for ten thousand years – focusing their activities on what would become Sarasota Bay.  The first European excursion into the area came in 1513, when a Spanish expedition landed at Charlotte Harbor.  However, it wouldn’t be until 1539 that Spanish Conquistador Hernando de Soto would land at Little Manatee River.  According to Exploring Florida, De Soto named this South Bay area ZaraSota or “Radiance of Soto.”  In Arabic, Zara translates to ‘radiance’ while the name De Soto derives from the Latin ‘saltus’, meaning a wooded copse or grove surrounded by meadowlands.  This area changed hands from the Spanish to the English and then back again before it became officially United States territory.  Sarasota, Florida was officially incorporated into a city in 1902.

Today, according to a 2013 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, Sarasota, Florida has a total population of 53,326 people.  According to another estimate in 2010, the Sarasota Metropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 720,042 people.

As one could guess by its seaside location, the economy of Sarasota, Florida is dominated by the tourism industry.  However, this isn’t the only feature of the city’s economy.  In fact, Boar’s Head Provision Company’s headquarters are located within the Sarasota, Florida area.  Additionally, the city’s main employers include Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, APAC Customer Services, L-3 Aviation Recorders, The Zenith, and Capgemini.  Elsewhere in the city is an abundance of golf courses and sport fishing areas.  In fact, Sarasota, Florida’s Municipal Auditorium-Recreation Club Building, which was built in 1937, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sarasota, Florida also features the Sarasota County Courthouse, which was built in 1926-1927 by architect Dwight James Baum in the Mediterranean Revival style.  The Sarasota County Courthouse is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  Sarasota, Florida is so well known for its architecture that it is also the home of the Sarasota School of Architecture.  This school is often also referred to as ‘Sarasota Modern.’  The Sarasota School of Architecture is not an actual, physical school, of course, but a post-war architectural style “which emerged on Florida’s Central West Coast, in and around the city of Sarasota, Florida.  Many of the architects who pioneered this style became world-renowned later in their careers.”

Aside from architecture, Sarasota, Florida is also home to the Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Opera, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, the Sarasota Players, and the Banyan Theater Company.  Annually, the city also hosts various festivals including, but certainly not limited to the Sarasota Film Festival, Ringling International Arts Festival, the Sarasota Chalk Festival, and, of course, the Whiskey Obsession Festival, which has the honored distinction of being the largest whiskey festival in Florida.  Sarasota, Florida is also home to Ed Smith Stadium, where MLB’s Baltimore Orioles have their spring training.
