Seattle Business Signs

Initially, the area of Washington state, which would one day become the city of Seattle, consisted of two villages: “New York Alki”, originally called “New York” and “Dewamps” or “Duwamps”.  Eventually the residents of New York Alki abandoned the town and moved to Duwamps.  One of Duwamps’s founders, David Swinson ‘Doc’ Maynard proposed the town be renamed “Seattle” after Chief Sealth “Seattle” of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.  The city was incorporated in 1865 and again in 1869.

In 2013, it was estimated that the city had a population of 652,405, making it the largest city located in the Pacific Northwest region of North America.  It is also known as the U.S.’ fastest-growing major city.  Seattle’s metropolitan area is home to around 3.6 million people, which means that it is the 15th largest metropolitan area in the country.

Seattle sits on an isthmus between Puget Sound and Lake Washington.  Puget Sound is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean.  As a consequence of this, Seattle has become a major gateway for trade with Asia.  The city is the 8th largest port in the United States and the 9th largest in North America in terms of container handling.

On the 2013 Fortune 500 list, there were four companies headquartered in Seattle city proper: internet retailer Amazon.com (#49), coffee chain Starbucks (#208), department store Nordstrom (#227), and freight forwarder Expeditors International of Washington (#428).  Other Fortune 500 companies are based in nearby Puget Sound areas.  These include warehouse club chain Costco (#22) and Microsoft (#35).  Other companies in the area include Nintendo of America, T-Mobile US, Expedia Inc., and Providence Health & Services, which is the state of Washington’s largest health care system and fifth largest employer.

Seattle’s nickname is the “Emerald City”, a reference to the lush evergreen forests of the area.  The city serves as a regional center for the performing arts.  The Seattle Symphony Orchestra performs primarily at Benaroya Hall, while the Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet perform at McCaw Hall.  The Opera is well known for its performances of the works of Richard Wagner.  Seattle is also considered the birthplace of grunge music, having spawned some of the genre’s most recognizable artists such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Mudhoney.

The city is home to the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, winners of the 2013 Lombardi Trophy.  The Seahawks play in CenturyLink Field along with MLS’ popular Seattle Sounders FC, who consistently have the largest attendance in the league.  Seattle’s other soccer team, the NWSL’s Seattle Reign FC, play at Memorial Stadium.  MLB’s Seattle Mariners play at Safeco Field while the WNBA’s Seattle Storm play in KeyArena and have won two championships.
