Southaven Business Signs

Southaven is a city located in the very northwestern-most corner of the present-day U.S. state of Mississippi.  Prior to meddling by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited since the first millennium A.D. by Mississippian Culture.  However, by the time Europeans arrived, a Mississippian-descended culture, the Chickasaw, had taken over the area.  However, the Chickasaw were “removed” during “Indian Removal” by the United States in the 1830s.  As for Southaven, Mississippi specifically, however, this city was founded much later.  Southaven, Mississippi began as a village when Memphis homebuilder Kemmons Wilson, who also happened to be the founder of Holiday Inn, wanted to “develop a few residential subdivisions featuring small starter homes just acros the Mississippi border from Whitehaven, Tennessee, an unincorporated suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.”  Interestingly, this is where Southaven, Mississippi got its name, it is located south of Whitehaven.  Southaven, Mississippi was officially incorporated on April 15th, 1980.

Today, according to a 2017 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Southaven, Mississippi has a total population of 54,031 people.  This makes Southaven, Mississippi the third most populous city in the entire state of Mississippi and the second most populous suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.  Of course, this makes Southaven, Mississippi officially part of the Memphis Metropolitan Area.  According to a 2013 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Memphis Metropolitan Area has a total population of 1,341,746 people.  This makes the Memphis Metropolitan Area the 41st most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

Southaven, Mississippi’s economy is nothing to sniff your nose at.  Indeed, according to a 2008 Fact-finding Report by the United States Census Bureau, Southaven, Mississippi has a “median income for a household of $46,691, while the median income for a family was $52,333.”  This must be why the city of Southaven, Mississippi is home to such an abundance of malls.  Malls located in and/or around the Southaven, Mississippi area include the Southaven Towne Center and Tanger Outlets Southaven.
