Then, in 1636, an English Puritan by the name of William Pynchon founded “Agawam Plantation.” This settlement would eventually grow into Springfield, Massachusetts. Pynchon settled on ‘Springfield,’ as it was the name of his hometown in Essex, England. Springfield, Massachusetts serves as the location of the headquarters for quite a few companies. These include the American Hockey League, which is the primary development league for the National Hockey League, Baystate Health, Big Y, Breck Shampoo, Hampden Bank, Health New England, MassMutual (which is the second largest Fortune 100 company located within the entire state of Massachusetts), Merriam-Webster (publisher of the original Webster Dictionary), Peter Pan Bus Lines, and Smith & Wesson. Smith & Wesson, founded in 1852, is America’s largest producer of handguns. In 2017, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported the largest four employers in the Springfield, Massachusetts area were Baystate Medical Center, Smith & Wesson, General Dynamics, and MassMutual, in that order.
Otherwise, Springfield, Massachusetts is home to quite a few institutions of higher learning. These colleges and universities include, but are certainly not limited to: Springfield College, Western New England University, American International College, and Springfield Technical Community College.
Springfield, Massachusetts is world famous for being the birthplace of the second most popular sport in the world. Indeed, the town has often been referred to as “Hoop City” due James Naismith’s local invention of basketball. As a result, Springfield, Massachusetts is also home to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Annually, the Basketball Hall of Fame holds an Enshrinement Weekend. Other festivals in and around the Springfield, Massachusetts area include the Hoop City Jazz Festival, Armory Big Band Concerts, Springfield Gay Pride Week, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society Festival, Bike Nights, Mattoon Street Arts Festival, Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival, World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast, Star Spangled Springfield, and The Parade of Big Balloons.
Other than being the birthplace of basketball, Springfield, Massachusetts is home to several sporting franchises of note. These include the Springfield Thunderbirds, who play in the American Hockey League in the MassMutual Center Arena. The Thunderbirds have no championships to their names at this time. Elsewhere in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts is Pair O’ Dice City Roller Derby, which is a roller derby league operating within the city.
