St. Cloud is a city located within the central region of the present-day U.S. state of Minnesota. Prior to incursions by those of European descent, this area had been inhabited by native populations for thousands of years.  However, by the time the Europeans did arrive, the Ottawa, Ojibwe, and Winnebago peoples had become prominent.  Following treaty “negotiations” with the Winnebago, this area was opened up to United States citizens for settlement in 1851.  In 1856, John Wilson officially founded the village of St. Cloud, Minnesota.  He was from Maine with French Huguenot ancestry and he was obsessed with Napoleon, so Wilson named his new village after Saint-Cloud, which is a suburb of Paris in France where Napoleon had his favorite palace.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate, the city of St. Cloud, Minnesota has a total population of 67,641 people.  This makes it the 10th most populous city in the entire state of Minnesota and the 525th most populous city in the country.  St. Cloud, Minnesota is of course considered part of the St. Cloud, Minnesota metropolitan area.  The St. Cloud, Minnesota metropolitan area, according to that same 2016 estimate, has a total population of 194,418 people.  This makes it the 222nd most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

St. Cloud, Minnesota is a city with a bustling economy.  In fact, according to the city’s 2011 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employer in the region is CentraCare Health System/St. Cloud Hospital, which employs a whopping 4,110 locals.  The second largest employer in the St. Cloud, Minnesota area is the State of Minnesota/St. Cloud State University, which employs 2,036 people.  The third and fourth largest employers in the St. Cloud, Minnesota area are St. Cloud VA Medical Center and Electrolux Home Products, who have 1,360 and 1,259 employees, respectively.

One of the most prominent features of St. Cloud, Minnesota is undoubtedly St. Cloud State University.  St. Cloud State University was established in 1869 as Third State Normal School.  Since then, St. Cloud State University has become a public university and one of the largest schools in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system.  As of 2017, St. Cloud State University has a $28.1 million endowment and as of 2016, has 15,092 students in total enrolled into its various programs.  The St. Cloud State University Huskies, who play in NCAA Division II – NSIC, Division I – NCHC, and Division I – WCHA, are most well known for their men’s and women’s ice hockey teams.

As for professional sporting franchises in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the city is home to the tier III hockey team Granite City Lumberjacks.  Additionally, St. Cloud, Minnesota is also home to Northwoods League’s St. Cloud Rox, which is a collegiate summer baseball league team which plays at Joe Faber Field.  They used to play their home games at Dick Putz Field.  The Rox have four league championships to their names.  Otherwise, St. Cloud, Minnesota is also home to the Saint Cloud Area Roller Dolls, which is a flat-track roller derby league.
