Sterling Heights is a city located in the southeastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan. Prior to meddling incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Potawatomi peoples. Sadly, due to the 1807 Treaty of Detroit, the Potawatomi of the local area were forced to cede their land and leave. Before Sterling Heights was known as Sterling Heights, this area (from around 1836 to 1838) was referred to as Jefferson Township. It wouldn’t be until all the way in 1968 when Sterling Heights, Michigan was officially incorporated into a city. In the 1950s, this area had been an agricultural hub – devoted to the development of primarily rhubarb, to be sold in the nearby metropolis of Detroit. In 2018, Sterling Heights, Michigan proudly celebrated its 50th year of existence as an incorporated city.
Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Sterling Heights, Michigan has a total population of 129,699 people. This means Sterling Heights, Michigan is the second largest suburb in the Metropolitan Detroit area. This also means Sterling Heights is the fourth most populous city in the entire state of Michigan. Additionally, Sterling Heights is also considered part of Metropolitan Detroit. According to that same 2016 estimate, Metropolitan Detroit has a total population of 4,296,250 people. This makes Metropolitan Detroit the 13th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.
According to CQ Press’s 2015 City Crime Rankings report, the city of Sterling Heights, Michigan “ranks as the safest city in the state with a population over 100,000 residents.” This is quite a reassuring feat. Sterling Heights, Michigan was also named nineteen out of 90 “Best Small Cities” to reside in by Money Magazine back in August of 2006.
A large facet of Sterling Heights, Michigan’s economy is undoubtedly Lakeside Mall, which opened back in 1976. This “Taubman-built super-regional full-line shopping mall” consists of two floors, with five current anchor tenants and 150 stores and services. Currently, Sterling Heights, Michigan’s Lakeside Mall is both owned and managed by Jones Lang LaSalle. Lakeside Mall is located on M-59, or Hall Road, between Hayes and Schoenherr Roads.
The city of Sterling Heights, Michigan isn’t all about its economy, however, there are quite a few educational institutions around as well. Sterling Heights, Michigan is currently served by two separate public-school districts. Both are found within the Macomb Intermediate School District. They are Utica Community Schools and Warren Consolidated Schools.
On a more national level, Sterling Heights, Michigan is “situated” within Michigan’s 9th Congressional District. Michigan’s 9th Congressional District is currently (as of April 2018) represented by Democrat Sander Levin. As for Sterling Heights, Michigan’s media, there is a plethora of newspapers serving the city at large. These include The Macomb Daily, which is owned by the Journal Register Company, The Sterling Heights Sentry, which is owned by C and G Newspapers, and The Sterling Heights Source, which is owned by Advisor & Source Newspapers.
