The city of Thornton is located towards the center of the present-day U.S. state of Colorado.  Prior to intervention by the United States, this land belonged to the Arapahoe peoples under the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie.  However, in 1858, gold was discovered in the area, and United States citizens flooded in.

Thornton, Colorado, specifically, was farmland before 1953.  However, in 1953, a gentleman by the name of Sam Hoffman purchased a lot off Washington Street approximately seven miles north of the city of Denver, Colorado.  Subsequently, Hoffman laid out a town here.  It was the first fully planned community in Adams County.  Additionally, Thornton, Colorado was also the first community in this area to “offer full municipal services from a single tax levy.”  Thornton, Colorado even offered free trash pickup!  The city was named in honor of Dan Thornton, who was a former governor of Colorado.  Thornton, Colorado was officially incorporated on June 12th, 1956.

The modern-day city of Thornton, Colorado, according to a 2010 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a population of 118,772 people.  This makes it the sixth-most populous city in the state of Colorado and the 213th most populous city in the United States.  Thornton is considered part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area.  The Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area, according to a 2015 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, has a total population of 2,812,732 people.  This makes it the 21st most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Thornton, Colorado is not currently home to any corporate headquarters of note.  The city does, however, offer a variety of shopping areas providing residents their various commercial needs.  Popular shopping destinations located in the Thornton, Colorado area include the Larkridge Mall, Thornton Town Center, and the Thorncreek Crossing Shopping Center.  Out of these three locations, Larkridge Mall is arguably the premiere place: home to “national anchor tenants, big box retailers, restaurants, and even a pedestrian village.”  In fact, Larkridge Mall is anchored by Colorado’s first Sears Grand store, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, PetsMart, and a whole list of other notable commercial chain stores.

Elsewhere in the city of Thornton, Colorado, according to Thornton City’s Parks and Recreation Department, residents can lose themselves among Thornton’s 81 parks and nearly 2,000 acres of parks and open space.  Additionally, there are over 80 miles of trails throughout the area.

Nestled amongst all this natural beauty, the city of Thornton, Colorado also boasts several recreational facilities such as the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center and the Thornton Community Center.  To top this all off, Thornton, Colorado is also home to several well-known golf courses.  Thornton, Colorado’s golf courses include Thorncreek Golf Course and Todd Creek Golf.

As for the education industry, the city of Thornton, Colorado is served by three separate public school districts: Adams County School District 12, Mapleton Public Schools, and Brighton School District 27J.  Charter schools in the area include Stargate School, Colorado Virtual Academy, New America School, and Westgate Community Charter School.  The city of Thornton, Colorado is also served by the Rangeview Library District.
