Toronto Business Signs

Toronto is a city located towards the eastern portion of Canada.  In fact, Toronto, Canada sits in the province of Ontario, and serves as its capital.  Prior to meddling by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Wyandot (Huron) people for centuries.  When the Europeans did finally arrive, the Iroquois Confederation had taken over the area.  The word ‘Toronto’ is most likely derived from the Iroquois word ‘tkaronto,’ which means either ‘place where trees stand in the water’ or ‘plenty.’  The first European settlement in the area was Fort Rouille, which was established by French fur traders in 1750.  However, by 1759, this fort had been abandoned. As a result of the ‘Toronto Purchase’ in 1787, the Mississaugas were forced to surrender lands in the Toronto area to the British crown.  Toronto was first established in 1793 as York, but it was officially incorporated as Toronto, Canada in 1834.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by Statistics Canada, the city of Toronto, Canada has a total population of 2,731,571 people.  This makes it the most populous city in Canada and the fourth most populous city in North America by population.  Additionally, according to that same 2016 estimate, the Toronto metropolitan area has a total population of 5,928,040 people, which makes it the most populous metropolitan area in Canada.

Toronto, Canada is home to a diverse plethora of attractions and industries.  Among the city’s most prominent sectors are those of music, theatre, movie picture and television production, Canadian broadcast networks, cultural institutions, national historic sites, and sporting events.  On top of all this, Toronto, Canada, funnily enough, serves as the home of the Toronto Stock Exchange, which houses Canada’s five largest banks “and the headquarters of many large Canadian and multinational corporations.”

Toronto, Canada is home to multiple performance venues including the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Massey Hall, the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres, and the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.  Toronto, Canada is so well known for its movie and T.V. productions that the city is considered the third largest such production hub in the world (after Los Angeles and New York City).  Along with Vancouver, Toronto, Canada shares the nickname “Hollywood North.”  The Toronto International Film Festival is famous worldwide.

As for Toronto, Canada’s sports scene – it is rather bustling.  Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC play their home games at BMO Field.  They have one title to their name.  National Lacrosse League’s Toronto Rock play their home games at Air Canada Centre.  They have six titles to their name.  NBA’s Toronto Raptors also play at Air Canada Centre.  MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays play at Rogers Centre.  The Blue Jays have won two World Series in their franchise’s lifetime.  NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, who play in Air Canada Centre, have won a grand total of 13 Stanley Cups.  Perhaps most impressively however, the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, who play at BMO Field, and who were first established in 1873, have won 17 Grey Cups.
