Troy Business Signs

Troy is a city located in the southeastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan.  Prior to meddling incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Potawatomi peoples.  Sadly, due to the 1807 Treaty of Detroit, the Potawatomi of the local area were forced to cede their land and leave.  As for Troy, Michigan specifically, the earliest known purchase of land by those of European descent in the region occurred in 1819.  Originally referred to as Troy Township (named after the famed city of Greek Antiquity), Troy, Michigan has been known as Troy Corners as well.  However, in 1955, Troy, Michigan was officially incorporated into a city.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Troy, Michigan has a total population of 83,641 residents.  This makes Troy, Michigan the 11th most populous city in the state.  It also makes Troy, Michigan the most populous city in Oakland County.  Additionally, Troy is considered part of Metropolitan Detroit.  According to that same 2016 estimate, Metropolitan Detroit has a total population of 4,296,250 people.  This makes Metropolitan Detroit the 13th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

As reported by CNN’s Money Magazine, the city of Troy, Michigan was ranked the safest city in the state in 2011.  It was also ranked the 19th safest city in the entire United States that year as well.  Even further back, in 2008, the city of Troy, Michigan was recognized as the 22nd Best Place to Live in the United States by that same magazine.  The city of Troy, Michigan was not only recognized by Money Magazine, however, Business Week, back in 2008, ranked the city as the fourth most affordable city in the country for a household with a median income of $79,000.

Troy, Michigan’s economy is dominated by two structures: The Top of Troy and the Somerset Collection Mall.  The Top of Troy, which is a skyscraper standing at 346 ft (105 m), was completed in 1975 in the International Style of Architecture.  It is still the tallest building in the city.  PNC Financial Services maintain regional offices within The Top of Troy.  As for the Somerset Collection Mall, this “super-regional luxury shopping mall” opened in 1969 and is currently owned and operated by The Forbes Company.  The Somerset Collection Mall contains 180 stores and services and features a skywalk.

Elsewhere in the city of Troy, Michigan is The Troy Historic Village.  The Troy Historic Village “is a fully interactive historical museum chronicling the different stages of Troy’s progression from its first settlers to the city it” is today.  This museum features ten sperate structures, chronicling each of Troy, Michigan’s distinct historic eras.  The city is also home to the largest Protestant Churches in the entire United States: Kensington Community Church and Woodside Bible Church.

Sadly, there are no professional sporting franchises of note within the city of Troy, Michigan.  Troy, Michigan, however, was recognized as Sports Illustrated’s 2003 “Michigan Sportstown” due to its strong community sports programs.
