Twin Falls is a city located within the southernmost region of the present-day U.S. state of Idaho.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, archeological excavations of the area surrounding the city have discovered evidence of human activity ranking among the oldest dated artifacts in North America.  Following these ancient people groups, however, were other Native tribes such as the Northern Shoshone and Bannock peoples.

The first successful expedition by citizens of the United States through what would become the Twin Falls, Idaho area occurred in 1812 and 1813, when Robert Stuart traveled eastward from Astoria to St. Louis.  Stuart’s route formed the basis of what would come to be known as the Oregon Trail.  The first permanent settlement in the Twin Falls, Idaho area occurred in 1864, but Twin Falls, Idaho itself wouldn’t be founded until I.B. Perrine founded the Twin Falls Land and Water Company in 1900.  The village of Twin Falls, Idaho was subsequently incorporated on April 12th, 1905.  Twin Falls, Idaho was named after a nearby waterfall on the Snake River of the same name.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Twin Falls, Idaho has a total population of 48,260 people.  This makes it the state of Idaho’s seventh most populous city.  The Twin Falls, Idaho metropolitan area, according to that same estimate, has a total population of 106,508 people.

Twin Falls, Idaho has a very active food production sector.  In fact, the city is home to cheese producer Glanbia Foods, a major American division of the Irish food company Glanbia plc.  Additionally, Falls Brand, Amalgamated Sugar Company, and Lamb Weston all maintain prevalent presences throughout the Twin Falls, Idaho area.

One of Twin Falls, Idaho’s other major economic forces is undoubtedly the College of Southern Idaho.  The College of Southern Idaho, which was established in 1965, is a public community college offering two-year associate degrees.  In total, about 9,100 students are enrolled in the College of Southern Idaho’s programs every semester.  The College of Southern Idaho’s Golden Eagles compete in Region 18 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and as of 2009, the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles have won a total of 11 NJCAA National Championships.

Elsewhere, nearby to Twin Falls, Idaho is Shoshone Falls, a majestic waterfall on the Snake River.  Interestingly, Shoshone Falls has often been called the “Niagara of the West.”  Shoshone Falls is 212 feet (65 m) high – 45 feet (14 m) higher than Niagara Falls – and flows over a rim nearly 1,000 feet (300 m) wide.
