Vancouver Business Signs

Vancouver is a city located in the present-day province of British Columbia, along Canada’s Pacific Coast.  Prior to European incursions, this area had been inhabited for at least 10,000 years by Aboriginal peoples.  The modern city of Vancouver, British Columbia is currently located “in the traditional and presently unceded territories” of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tseil-Waututh (Burrard) peoples of the Coast Salish group.  The first individual of European descent to explore this area was probably Jose Maria Narvaez of Spain in 1791, however some contend it was England’s Sir Francis Drake back in 1579.  Originally, the settlement which would eventually become Vancouver was named Gastown, after the proprietor of a makeshift tavern, “Gassy Jack” Deighton.  However, eventually, this settlement’s name was changed to Vancouver, in honor of the explorer George Vancouver.  Vancouver, British Columbia was officially incorporated into a city on the sixth of April in 1886.

Today, according to aa 2016 estimate by Statistics Canada, an agency for the Government of Canada, the city of Vancouver, British Columbia has a total population of 631,486 people.  This makes it the 8th most populous city in Canada.  Vancouver, British Columbia’s metropolitan population, however, according to that same estimate, consists of 2,463,431 persons.  This makes it the 3rd most populous metropolitan area in Canada.

Due to its location along Canada’s Pacific Coast, Vancouver, British Columbia’s economy has often been dominated by industry and trade.  In fact, the city serves as the western terminus for Canada’s transcontinental highway and rail routes.  Additionally, Port Metro Vancouver is Canada’s largest and most diversified port.  Port Metro Vancouver “does more than C$172 billion in trade with over 160 different trading economies annually.”  This port’s activities also generate “C$9.7 billion in GDP and C$20.3 billion in economic output.”

In recent decades, Vancouver, British Columbia has also grown into a hub for television and film production, garnering the nickname “Hollywood North.”  The city is also known for its software development, biotechnology, aerospace, and video game development sectors.  Elsewhere, the city also boasts a variety of world-famous and tourist-attracting gardens, including Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, and VanDusen Botanical Garden.  Vancouver, British Columbia also contains a significant military presence, in the form of Jericho Beach, the headquarters of 39 Canadian Brigade Group of the Canadian Army.

When it comes to sports, Vancouver, British Columbia has them in abundance.  In fact, the city hosted both the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games and the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.  As for the city’s local professional sporting franchises, there are the BC Lions, the Vancouver Canadians, the Vancouver Canucks, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.  Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who play in Major League Soccer, play their home games at BC Place.  They have one Canadian Championship to their names.  NHL’s Vancouver Canucks play their home matches in Rogers Arena.  The Canucks have two Presidents’ Trophies to their name.  The Vancouver Canadians are a minor league baseball team who play in the Northwest League.  The Canadians are an affiliate of MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays.  The Canadians play their home games at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.  They have four league titles to their name.  Finally, the BC Lions are members of the Canadian Football League.  They play their home games at BC Place.  The BC Lions have won a grand total of 6 Grey Cups.
