Virginia Beach Business Signs
Virginia Beach is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The point at which the bay and the ocean meet is called Cape Henry. Cape Henry is famous for being the site of the first landing of English colonists on April 26th, 1607. The colonists named the area ‘Virginia’ after Queen Elizabeth I, who was popularly known as ‘The Virgin Queen.’ Eventually Virginia would become a member of the United States of America.
Today, Virginia Beach is the most populous city in Virginia as well as the 39th most populous city in the country. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 437,994. It has a population of 1.7 million, which makes it the 37th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Virginia Beach is listed in the Guinness Book of World’s Records as having the longest pleasure beach in the world. Due to the massive size of this beach, the tourist industry has a large impact on the city. Every year, Virginia Beach attracts 2.75 million visitors. Those visitors pour an estimated $73 million into the local economy. To top it all off, the tourism industry provides 14,900 jobs to the area.
Tourism isn’t the only business, which booms in Virginia Beach, however. The city is home to a large agribusiness sector, with 172 farms producing $80 million a year. The military also has a large presence with bases in the area, which include United States Navy’s NAS Oceana and Training Support Center Hampton Roads, and the Joint Expeditionary Base East located at Cape Henry. NAB Little Creek is also located within the city, even though it carries a Norfolk address.
Other major economic powerhouses within Virginia Beach are Lynnhaven Mall and major company headquarters including Amerigroup, CBN, Operation Blessing International, and Stihl (American headquarters).
Virginia Beach is also famous for serving as the home for False Cape State Park and The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center (formerly the Virginia Marine Science Museum). The aquarium features the 300,000-gallon Norfolk Canyon Aquarium, which contains sand tiger, nurse, and brown sharks, as well as sting rays. There is also a 70,000-gallon sea turtle aquarium and sea turtle hatchling laboratory.
Virginia Beach boasts the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, born out of the annual Boardwalk Art Show, which began in 1952. The Virginia Beach Amphitheater was built in 1996 and hosts a diverse lineup of concerts every year. The largest festival in the city is the Neptune Festival. This attracts 500,000 visitors to the Oceanfront and 350,000 visitors to the air show at NAS Oceana. It celebrates Virginia Beach’s heritage link with Norway and is held in September.
There are no major professional sports teams in Virginia Beach, which makes it the 3rd largest metropolitan area in the U.S. without one. (After Las Vegas and Austin) However, the Norfolk Admirals won the AHL Calder Cup in 2012.
Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships as well as the annual North American Sand Soccer Championship. The Sand Soccer Championship also includes the Pro/Am competition, which brings teams from all over the world to compete in the tournament.
