Warren Business Signs

Warren is a city located in the southeastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Michigan.  Prior to meddling incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by the Potawatomi peoples.  Sadly, due to the 1807 Treaty of Detroit, the Potawatomi of the local area were forced to cede their land and leave.  As for Warren, Michigan specifically, however, it was founded in 1830 as Beebe’s Corners.  Then, in 1837, it was renamed Hickory, then Aba, then finally Warren Township.  Warren, Michigan was possibly named after General Joseph Warren, who fell at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War.  More likely, however, Warren, Michigan was named after War of 1812 and Frontier Preacher Reverend Abel Warren.  Warren was the first licensed preacher in the State of Michigan.  Warren, Michigan would not be officially incorporated into a city until 1957.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Warren, Michigan has a population of 135,125 people.  This makes it the third largest city in the entire state of Michigan, the largest suburb of Metro Detroit, and the 195th most populous city in the country.  Warren, Michigan is part of Metropolitan Detroit.  According to that same 2016 estimate, Metropolitan Detroit has a total population of 4,296,250 people.  This makes Metropolitan Detroit the 13th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

The city of Warren, Michigan serves as the headquarters for several companies such as Big Boy Restaurants and Art Van.  As reported by Warren, Michigan’s 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employer in the city, by an extremely large margin, is General Motors.  General Motors is responsible for 17,000 local Warren, Michigan jobs.  The second largest employer in the Warren, Michigan area is TACOM, which is responsible for 6,500 jobs.  Coming in at third is Chrysler, who employ 4,200 Warren, Michigan locals.

The city of Warren, Michigan is perhaps most famous as the site of the General Motors Technical Center.  In fact, the General Motors Technical Center, which was built in 1949 in the International Style of architecture, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark.  The General Motors Technical Center, which is still very much in use, “has been the center of the company’s engineering effort.”

Warren, Michigan is also home to the United States Army Detroit Arsenal.  The United States Army Detroit Arsenal houses the United States Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command and the Tank Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center (TARDEC).  Interestingly, the Detroit Arsenal was once called the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant (DATP).  The Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant “was the first manufacturing plant ever built for the mas production of tanks in the United States.”  After it had been established by Chrysler in 1940, the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant produced the famous M1 Abrams tank (with the help of a plant located in Lima, Ohio) all the way up until 1996.
