West Palm Beach is a city located on the southeastern portion of the present-day state of Florida’s protuberance.  Prior to European invasion, this area had been inhabited by various native groups for four thousand years and then subsequently inhabited by the Tequesta peoples for two thousand years.  Due to a combination of Spanish biological warfare and conflict with the neighboring Calusa during the 16th century, the Tequesta were soon to disappear forever.  This area was then taken over by the United Kingdom, the United States, the Confederate States of America, then the United States yet again.

West Palm Beach, Florida, specifically, came into being during the 1870s and 80s when tropical fruit and vegetable farmers settled in the area.  Originally, these settlers referred to their new environ as “Lake Worth County,” after a Colonel William Jenkins Worth, veteran of the Second Seminole War in Florida in 1842.  However, across from Lake Worth was an island referred to as Palm Beach, which is where the modern city derived its name.  The town of West Palm Beach, Florida was officially incorporated on November 5th, 1894, while the city of West Palm Beach, Florida was officially incorporated on July 21st, 1903.
