Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Winston-Salem Business Signs

Winston-Salem is a city located in the northwestern portion of the present-day U.S. state of North Carolina.  Prior to European invasion, this area had been inhabited by the Eno and Occoneechi peoples.  The Eno and the Occoneechi are related to the Sioux and Shakori peoples.  As for Winston-Salem, North Carolina specifically, this city began as a merger between two villages.  Salem was founded in 1766 by Moravians, while Winston was founded in 1849, and eventually named after Revolutionary War hero Joseph Winston.  The two towns officially merged and incorporated into Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1913.

Today, according to a 2016 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina has a total population of 242,203 people.  This makes it the fifth most populous city in the entire state of North Carolina and the 89th most populous city in the country.  According to that same 2016 estimate, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina metropolitan area has a total population of 667,733 people.  This makes it the 83rd most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.

Historically, Winston-Salem, North Carolina has been known for its affiliation with the tobacco industry.  In fact, even today, the city is home to the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.  The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is responsible for the manufacture of Camel cigarettes.  As a result of this, the city has often been nicknamed “Camel City.”

Other corporations with headquarters located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina include BB&T (or the Branch Banking and Trust Company), HanesBrands, Inc., Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc., Lowes Foods Stores, ISP Sports, K&W Cafeterias, TW Garner Food Company, and Blue Rhino.  Prior to merging with the First Union Corporation in 2001, Wachovia Corporation was also based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

This is the reason why the tallest building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina was once called the Wachovia Center.  Now known simply as 100 North Main Street or the Wells Fargo Center, this postmodern skyscraper reaches 460 feet (140 m) into the air.  It served as the headquarters of Wachovia Bank from its completion in 1995 to that company’s move in 2001.  As can already be surmised, the tower is now under the control of Wells Fargo.  Originally, 100 North Main Street was designed by Petronas Towers architect Cesar Pelli, who designed it with Moravian architectural features in mind.  Moravian architecture can be found all over the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, due to that church’s heavy involvement in the founding of the two merging towns, specifically Salem.

As for sports, Winston-Salem, North Carolina is currently home to two distinct professional sporting franchises of note.  Federal Hockey League’s Carolina Thunderbirds play their home games in the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex.  As of right now, the Carolina Thunderbirds have no titles or championships to their name, but this could very well be due to the fact they were only founded in 2016.  Baseball’s Carolina League’s Winston-Salem Dash play their home games at BB&T Ballpark.  They are a minor league affiliate of MLB’s Chicago White Sox.  The Dash have nine league titles to their name.
