Woodbury is a city located in the central-eastern region of the present-day U.S. state of Minnesota. Prior to incursions by those of European descent, this area was inhabited by members of the Dakota tribe. When the territory was “ceded” by the Native American tribes to “open settlement” in 1851, Woodbury was part of the congressional townships of Minnesota Territory. Originally named Red Rock, the settlement was renamed Woodbury, after the First Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Levi Woodbury, after it was discovered another Red Rock already existed in Minnesota. Woodbury, Minnesota was officially settled in 1844 but would not be officially incorporated into a city until all the way in 1967.

Woodbury, Minnesota is also considered part of the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area. According to that same 2016 estimate, the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area has a total population of 413,651 people. This makes it the most populous metropolitan area in the state of Minnesota. Additionally, this also makes the Minneapolis, Minnesota Metropolitan Area the 46th most populous metropolitan area in the entire United States of America.
Woodbury, Minnesota is home to several businesses and institutions of note. Among these is 3M, whose headquarters may be situated in nearby Maplewood, Minnesota, but whose company employs many in the Woodbury, Minnesota community. Additionally, Woodbury, Minnesota is home to the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology. The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is “the international certifying body for allied health personnel in the medical field of ophthalmology, who are collectively termed ophthalmic medical personnel.” (Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dealing with eyes and vision.) Woodbury, Minnesota also serves as the location for the Charles Spangenberg Farmstead. The Charles Spangenberg Farmstead is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This historic farm was established all the way back in 1869, but it was built between 1871 and 1900 by the architects Charles and Frederick Spangenberg. The Charles Spangenberg Farmstead is now one of the few surviving 19th-century farmsteads in all of Washington County, Minnesota.
